A homecoming for the whole ecosystem
Startup Onam brings startup founders, employees, interns and families together to celebrate Kerala’s culture and the joy of Onam. Come with your team, meet the startup community and enjoy a full day of celebrations.
It isn't a work event with a festive theme bolted on. It's Onam run properly — a pookalam competition on the ground in the morning, chendamelam and a Mahabali procession at midday, a Sadhya on a banana leaf, an afternoon stage that belongs to the startups themselves, and a DJ set to finish. The only difference is who's standing next to you: a founder, a first-week intern, someone's family, all in the same queue.

Kerala Startup Mission
Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) is the Government of Kerala's nodal agency for entrepreneurship development and incubation, set up in 2006. It backs founders from school and college level all the way to scale-up, through incubation, funding programmes, coworking "LEAP" centres and market access support across the state — under one simple line: "Dream it. Do it."
The KSUM Campus, Kochi
The Kerala Startup Mission campus at Kalamassery is one of the largest integrated startup facilities anywhere — built to house both software and hardware/deep-tech startups under one roof, and home to hundreds of early-stage teams. For one day in Chingam, the whole campus turns into an Onam ground.
The legend behind the festival
Onam marks the homecoming of King Mahabali — a benevolent asura ruler under whom Kerala is remembered as a land of equality, honesty and abundance. Wary of his growing power, the gods sent Vishnu in the form of Vamana, a dwarf, to ask Mahabali for three paces of land. With his third step, Vamana pushed Mahabali down to the netherworld — but moved by his humility, granted him one wish: to visit his people once every year. Onam is that visit. Kerala dresses up, cooks its finest, and opens its doors — because Maveli, as he's fondly known, is coming home to see if his people are still thriving.
It's a fitting story for a startup campus to retell. Every founder building here is, in a small way, trying to build the Kerala Maveli once ruled over — prosperous, fair, and good to everyone in it. On the day itself, Maveli arrives in person: a chendamelam procession welcomes him onto campus at midday, just before the pookalam results and the group photo. Startup Onam is our once-a-year pause to celebrate that, together, before getting back to building.
